Trouble with Galaga Legions wave 10 death trick

On round 5 of Championship mode on wave 10 I imagine most people know about the trick where you die over and over to milk up your score. Is anyone else having difficulty with forcefully dying. It seems like when we do it the game's slow-down kicks in to such a degree that it makes it very hard to die on purpose and therefore keeping us from driving up our score. If anyone knows any tips on how to die consistently that would be very helpful.
